Count the Cost, pt 1
In life, everything valuable has a price — and discipleship is no exception. Israel’s wilderness journey revealed that sincere words are not the same as settled hearts; they declared obedience but retreated to Egypt in their desires. Likewise, Jesus made clear that while salvation is freely given to all who believe, discipleship requires deliberate surrender, endurance, and sacrifice. Through the images of a builder counting his resources and a king assessing his army, Christ teaches that following Him is not impulsive but intentional — not emotional but enduring. The wilderness exposes shallow commitment but strengthens settled allegiance. To triumph in the wilderness, we must count the cost, surrender fully to Christ, and determine that He is worth whatever obedience requires.
